Using auto tweets during Olympic Rowing to attract video uploads from Dorney Lake

Jon Davey, Director of Inspiration Customer Experiences over at Social Media Directors is looking for more potential clients to be inspired to commission him (me) to work through their social media engagement challenges…

To showcase my creative thinking and to make my small mark on the Olympics, I have come up with this potentially great use of auto tweets to engage with those attending, and taking part in the Olympic rowing at Dorney Lake.

If you are trying to boost awareness of your company, products and brands then auto tweets can be useful… they only tend to annoy Twitter purists… the target for the tweet tends to respond positively…

If you are into social media to generate business you might enjoy this experiment… keep one eye on it while enjoying the TV coverage.

Bit of history on me first… I started building websites in 1999… created Business in Berkshire in 2002 as a community newsletter… this became a CMS website and grew to 5m pages views a year… 2009 I launched Social Media Directors to educate folk in how to make the most of the web… those that have listened to me have made a few quid ;) … most haven’t the energy to keep peddling through the silence to reach the stadium of light!

I Love Windsor was a vision of mine and local artist, Dennis Blandford, who sadly passed away earlier this year… our vision was to try and do something locally that would earn us a few quid while showcasing our beautiful Windsor… my mission now is to keep this dream alive and have some fun over the Olympic period while experimenting with new ideas to see if we can’t get this joint jumping ;)

I Love Windsor uses our BinB CMS which still has some power but it is waning, as Google moves increasingly towards real time search… WordPress offers a stronger platform with the ability to add in the necessary widgets to engage with current social media platforms… out of this Windsor Daily has been born.

Windsor Daily’s three channels: the blog, the Twitter account and the YouTube Channel.

After seeing some photos yesterday of England team rowing Dorney Lake it said to me, let’s get a bunch of video clips locked and loaded by people in the stadium, during the races… it would be brilliant to have this footage on a communal platform for the world to enjoy…

The original plan was to try and drive people from Dorney Lake into Windsor town but I have a strong feeling this is not going to happen… the visitors are corralled and driven round Windsor Racecourse to the security tend where bags are checked and all food confiscated… the Olympic rowing fans will then be lead over the pontoon bridge to Dorney Lake where they can buy all the McDonald’s they can eat ;) And coming back they will be pilled onto coaches and removed from the area ASAP…

I had set up a few auto tweets previously…

With auto tweets you don’t want to sell, you want to engage… so footage of the Queen taking her Jubilee Walk around Windsor is a fantastic clip for most folk… you get the odd republican who spits feathers but 99% of the world loves our Queen… currently 1595 people have watched the video… most videos are lucky to get 10 viewings!

Therefore, when someone follows our @windsordaily twitter channel they are automatically sent this message with a link to the video on the website:

Thank you for following us… enjoy the Queen’s Jubilee walk http://www.ilovewindsor.co.uk/extra4.html around Windsor

This has been our welcome tweet for a month… just a couple of days ago, while looking to drive folk into Windsor I created a few auto tweets which are despatch when certain conditions are met… the first one is triggered if someone mentions Dorney Lake and the Olympics in the same tweet and they are within a 50 mile radius of Windsor.

Olympics AND “Dorney Lake” (50 mile radius)
Hey, if you’re going to Dorney Lake during the Olympics follow @windsordaily for local retail / restaurant offers… get into Windsor town ;)

The others follow a similar pattern…

Dorney AND rowing (100 mile radius)
Hey, if you’re going to Dorney Lake during the Olympics follow @windsordaily for local retail / restaurant offers… get into Windsor town ;)

dorney AND olympics (100 mile radius)
Hey, if you’re going to Dorney Lake during the Olympics follow @windsordaily for local retail / restaurant offers… get into Windsor town ;)

windsor AND olympics (100 mile radius)
Hey, if you’re going to Windsor during the Olympics follow @windsordaily for local retail / restaurant offers… get into Windsor town ;)

Based on the new mission of simply, or not so simply, getting folk to send their 3 minute mobile video clips to our Windsor Daily YouTube Channel let’s add a few more triggers… we’ll leave the one’s above just in case but how about this…

An additional welcome message to anyone who follows us on Twitter:

In town for the Olympics at Dorney Lake? Please send us short video clips to ga6lb6ivoo13@m.youtube.com and we’ll share… thank you ;)

Let’s follow those who mention Olympic rowing, Olympics rowing, #Olympic rowing, #Olympics rowing and are within a 5 mile radius of Dorney Lake.

And send out the following message to a few of those we follow…

olympic rowing (5 mile radius)
Watching or better still involved in the Olympic Rowing at Dorney Lake… send us your video clips ga6lb6ivoo13@m.youtube.com A BIG THANK YOU

I have literally just set this up… so the process begins… one measure of effectiveness is those that choose to watch our channel and see what’s going on… at the time of writing we have 715 followers… and we are following 705 people.

I plan on visiting Dorney Lake and capturing some video from around the perimeter… this will encourage folk to follow and start the process of the message going out that we want videos… shot this yesterday…

Since most folk prefer to just sit back and watch the efforts of others… and the generally accepted norms of social media engagement are 90% just watch what is going on… 9% may post the odd comment now and again… and only 1% actually engage more fully.

So if we get 1000 new followers over the next few days then that would equate to 10 videos being loaded by followers.

Let’s roll the dice and see what happens… auto tweets set… video channel ready to receive short video clips… bring it on ;)

Thank you
