We look at the ways in which this content can be used most effectively and how to follow those businesses which have made a success using these methods.</p>

<p>I understand the power of pages being indexed.  We get found every day by hundreds of people looking for looking for answers to current questions they have and some even make contact.</p>
<p>Yes you can tweak this or that to make improvements but that is <span id="more-1231"></span>probably more important for B2C customers who are looking at the bling… over in B2B land where information is king, most will be happy with a neutral design as long as the content is of interest… no-one wants a flashing ad next to food for their brain do they?</p>
<p>I know, or would like, to be adding more content regularly to the Social Media Directors blog… so how can I do that without being annoying… what I mean is that I spend a great deal of time over at LinkedIn responding to comments that people have made and most of these are then tweeted out to the world via twitter… some of the content is very interesting but it doesn’t get to appear on the SMD blog?</p>
<p>I have chosen not to follow on twitter as I don’t tend to read the stream of info… I’m more likely to do a bit of research on something in real time and join in that way… that follow you, follow me thing is so 2009 <img src='http://www.socialmediadirectors.co.uk/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>So how about capturing a days worth of tweets and adding them as a post on the SMD Blog… or probably a few days if not much has been happening…</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3>The world of online marketing is forever changing with new techniques being dreamt up every day.  It can get very confusing and result in mass inertia with only the self professed “gurus” at the party, telling each other how great they are!</h3>
<p>Back in 1999, all you needed was a 1 page website and you could be the envy of all your friends and business colleagues, whose senior management would not hear of such a ridiculous waste of resources… it’ll never take off.</p>
<p>Today, Twitter would have you believe <span id="more-1193"></span>that if you aren’t sending a tweet every 20 seconds you’re sooooo not engaging.  Facebook would say that all your friends are online and buying stuff with Facebook Credits… X Factor want you to vote using credits so they can keep your wall full of short cuts to their contestants MP3 files, handy for you to download at only 99p a track… how many millions will Mr Simon Cowell be raking in this Christmas… HO, HO, HO <img src='http://www.socialmediadirectors.co.uk/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p><img src="http://www.companypages.org.uk/pictures/x_factor_2012.jpg" style="margin:10px 0px 0px 10px" alt="X Factor 2012" /></p>
<p>Now X Factor is top of the pops, generating 12 million viewers to the TV show every week… if they get 1,000,000 hitting their website and 50,000 buying a track or two, this makes for great financial foundations for next year, 2012.</p>
<p>Coming back to reality, we all need to ask ourselves, “Are we as hot at X factor or Strictly?”</p>
<p>Let’s be honest… probably not… if you get 1,000 viewers to your website every month then you’re probably doing pretty well… and as for how many will want to Tweet or Like your home page, probably a handful if you are lucky… </p>
<p>Don’t try and compete unless you have a similar marketing budget to the big boys… simply ask, how can the web support your other avenues to market and work within realistic parameters.</p>
<p>The best single thing you can have in play is a website.  That will make it easy for the visitor to get to know what your business is about and how you can help them solve a current problem.  This doesn’t have to be a fancy design, it needs to be one your potential customers will engage with.</p>
<p>Most of your website visitors are likely to come via the search engines as this is the first place people go to search for a solution… they may ask a friend but it is likely they will visit Google first.  So having a strong search engine optimised website is key to people finding you.</p>
<p>If you sell fun stuff then creating a Facebook page makes a great deal of sense as mostly people go on Facebook to have fun and chat with friends. They may search for answers to problems and hey presto, if you are present and have a reasonable number of fans, may engage by Liking what you do.</p>
<p>For most B2B businesses, LinkedIn is a place where business men and women go to find solutions… they may well join Groups that relate to their industry and ask for help amongst others with a similar interest&#8230; knowing how to engage with LinkedIn for business is key in 2012.  They have over 135 million members around the world, 7 million in the UK and 150,000 within a 10 mile radius of where I am sat right now.</p>

<p>Over the last year teachers have been<span id="more-1068"></span> encouraged to upload short videos about how they get their message across to students who need a great deal of positive engagement to get them off their i-Phones in class&#8230;  in many schools teachers are powerless to prevent texting in class which is ridiculous and needs to be addressed&#8230; perhaps this could be the subject of a future O2 learning campaign?</p>
<p>Amazingly two teachers from Burnham Grammar School are still in with a chance of winning but they need your vote&#8230;  and you have until this Wednesday 28th September to vote&#8230; <a href="https://www.o2learn.co.uk/index.php">they can win some BIG MONEY so VOTE NOW&#8230;</a></p>
<h3>The awards</p>
<p>1st prize: £50,000 for the teacher, £100,000 for their school.</p>
<p>2nd prize: £20,000 for the teacher, £40,000 for their school.</p>
<p>3rd prize: £10,000 for the teacher, £20,000 for their school.</h3>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3>“How often should you post on Facebook?” asks David Verchere over at Posthelpers.com</h3>
<p>Only a week ago he was celebrating making the <a href="http://lnkd.in/NmFa32">NYTM List – Internet Made In NYC</a>. New York Tech Meetup, with over 18,000 members, representing professionals from all parts of the New York technology community added PostHelpers to it’s list of great companies and projects being conceived and managed and funded in NYC.</p>
<p>Now that’s something to add to his wall posts on Facebook and I’m guessing he has.</p>
<p>My take and therefore summary of his summary of research is:</p>
<ul>
<li>if you post to your Facebook wall every day you are more likely to be picked up by the guys and gals who write the news for the publications and become more famous than you are right now.</li>
<li>Writing Facebook wall posts less than once a week is like so lame you may as well not bother.</li>
<li>Ensure the things you add to your Facebook wall are interesting and original so as to be worthy of sharing with fans of fans and one day you’ll get an Oscar and be worth a million dollars&#8230;</li>
</ul>
<p>Well, with the exchange rate set to go through the roof you may need 4 zillion to be worth a million <img src='http://www.socialmediadirectors.co.uk/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' />  </p>
<p>His presentation makes for good reading on <a href="http://www.posthelpers.com/2011/07/how-often-should-you-post-on-facebook">How often should you post on Facebook</a> and I added this story to SMD to shine a light on David Verchere to say thank you for contributions to our <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Social-Media-Directors-2513607?goback=%2Egde_2513607_member_64044483">Social Media Directors LinkedIn Group</a> and to highlight the way the American’s celebrate their innovators&#8230; in the UK we need more of that&#8230; </p>
<p>Oh, yeah, I also wanted to fly higher on Google for the search How often should you post on Facebook than he is&#8230; the child in me shining through!</p>
